Environmental Policy
The University Authorities are aware of the importance of promoting the conservation, defense, and improvement of the environment and natural resources in general. For this reason, and in compliance with the provisions of the current legal framework and principles that guide the university social responsibility, the authorities agree to boost the entrepreneurial spirit —in terms of sustainability— as one of the cross-curricular themes of academic education in Unimet, promoting the rational use of resources and the correct management of residues and solid waste, and incorporating aspects that permit the continuous improvement of its facilities.
It is policy of the Metropolitan University to take the necessary actions to face and detect possible adverse events. Likewise, the university is committed to maintain, document and update this policy, and then inform it the public.
Unimet Sustainability Model
Avila Project
Since 2000, the Avila Project of the Metropolitan University, aware of its commitment to the Waraira Repano National Park, has been making various efforts aimed at promoting the conservation of the protected area, deploying various efforts of research and environmental conservation, through a multidisciplinary group of experts. From that moment on, it committed to strengthen the Unimet as an institution of high environmental responsibility and commitment before society.

Specific objectives
To develop each specific objective, various actions have been carried out to study the execution environment, involving the main actors and communicating the main achievements, or conservation needs, among the various actors. The objectives are:
- Keep the green firewall adjacent to Unimet.
- Support a nursery for educational purposes and reforestation of the National Park with native species, including plants considered endangered.
- Support a bromeliad nursery and an orchidarium for educational and recreational purposes, and contemplation of the scenic beauty of the wild species found there.
- Reforest some critical areas within the National Park using native species.
- Recover degraded green areas in Caracas, or other regions, using appropriate species for the planting site.
- Promote recycling of solid waste, production of organic fertilizer, and integrated management of water, with eco-efficiency criteria.
- Raise awareness in the university community, and its areas of influence, through the holding of specialized forums, workshops and seminars.
- Promote environmental education in strategic topics and areas for the management of the National Park.
The project also includes the establishment of monitoring and control mechanisms to ensure the continuity of the developed efforts, as well as various initiatives to raise awareness, inform, and educate the community, on the common objective of environmental conservation.
Avila Project Nursery
The Avila Project nursery is an eco-efficient structure in which resources are used to the maximum and the aim is to promote the minimum production of 15,000 plants per years. Likewise, it has an internal irrigation system and an interconnection with the water system of the green firewall, which is powered by gravity and has energy-saving sprinklers to promote a sustainable resource consumption. The area is also used for personnel awareness and training in good practices that are in harmony with the conservation objectives of the protected area. For example, plant production techniques with reforestation purposes; native seed selection, collection and management; preparation of substrates for containers, preparation of organic fertilizers, and control of pests and diseases.
Annually, the nursery receives a large number of internal and external visitors, who want to learn about environmental preservation, take guided visits to learn about the activities developed in the nursery, such as germination and plant reproduction, and participate in activities that boost ‘learning by doing’.
Opening hours
Monday to Friday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Orchidarium of Avila Project
The orchidarium has a particular characteristic that makes it unique in the city: it has wild, herbaceous, parasitic plants recovered from different areas of the Waraira Repano National Park, and from green areas of our university. None of the plants were extracted from their natural habitat, all were recovered from the ground or fallen trees that can no longer offer any substrate to the plant.
Additionally to orchids, some species of bromeliads can be seen. In total, 57 bromeliads of 6 different species can be found here, such as Neoregelia fireball, Royal burgundy, Ananas comosus, Neoregelia bracteata, Aechmea y Tillandsia. In the case of orchids, we have 30 orchids of at least 5 species, such as Oncidium Amarillo, Brassavola nodosa, Stanhopea, Cattleya y Oncidium.
The recovery process of the plants began with the support of our nursery staff, external botanical advisors and various institutions, such as the Directorate of Green Areas of Baruta Mayor’s Office, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude from Avila Project.
In this space, we show the first steps of a project that required a lot of effort, but that invites to enjoy the spectacle of the beauty displayed, from both our national flower and other species.

Achievements
Good practices encompass those programs, projects or policies developed by various actors and characterized for the achievement of their objectives; for having systems to register, monitor and evaluate results; and for their innovation, replicability and sustainability. Next are summarized some practices carried out by Unimet, within the framework of Avila Project, as well as their main achievements:
- Planting of more than 25 thousand trees in 15 years.
- Recovery of the green firewall adjacent to Unimet, with its respective maintenance 365 days a year.
- Conducting of more than 80 scientific and technical forums.
- Conducting of more than 100 tree planting and environmental awareness activities.
- Establishment of an independent water system to supply the firewall, nursery and orchidarium with water.
- Promotion of social capital through the training of municipal officials in appropriate techniques for pruning in urban areas, as well as in management of socio-environmental risks.
- Production of more than 300 kilos of organic fertilizer per year through four composters that recycle nutrients from the university’s organic residues.
- Training in techniques of plant production and native seed selection, collection and management.
- Environmental education on endangered vegetal species of the National Park.
- Dissemination of the program’s scope through thel media and various specialized organizations.
Collaborators
Avila Project is possible thanks to the support of private companies, who have entrusted their social investment to the Metropolitan University. Additionally, in order to achieve the objectives established, permanent communication has been maintained between INPARQUES and Unimet with the purpose of coordinating efforts between both parts, exchange technical assistance and institutional support in the elaboration, evaluation and execution of action projects, programs and plans on the subject of conservation, environmental education, communications, and other areas related to the National Park.
Furthermore, it has the support of Unimet students, and from other universities, who, day after day, visit the Avila Project nursery to work in favor of environmental conservation.
Avila Project provides an excellent opportunity to reconnect with the extraordinary diversity of animals and plants of the National Park, a renewable natural resource whose survival is in the hands of all Venezuelans. This is a clear example of how the conservation of natural resources, and the environment in general, should be approached, where all professional and technical sectors have something to contribute.
